INCREDIBLE NEWS!!
There’s going to be two new Rahui-Tapu No-take protected areas!!!
Maunganui-Oke Bay and Mimiwhangata have been granted long-term no-take protection plus a closure around Cape Brett out to 100m and south to Elliott’s Bay to both purse seining and bottom trawling.
This is huge for the Bay of Islands with the extension of the current Mauganui Bay (Deep Cove) Rahui down to and including the stunning Oke Bay, this is going to make the Rahui-Tapu more accessible to a wider range of people.
Mimiwhangata has been a marine park for 30 years but has not delivered positive results so having been granted long-term no-take protection in my option is going to make a massive difference.
Mimiwhangata Rahui-Tapu protected area is almost 3 times larger than the Poor Knight Island Reserve.
These newly granted areas will not come into affect until later in 2023 so in the mean time the current Mauganui Bay (Deep Cove) Rahui remains in place.
